Screengrabs and Videos from the editing process

Above is the 'sequence menu' where our different sequences are stored, also our animatic is in this.

The compressed timeline from our video, red indicates general markers, yellow is things that needed addressing such as a sync error, or a shot that just looks odd. Green marked the introduction of the dance sequences, which we rearranged half-way through the editing process.

This is our finished cut, after we complied all the footage from about 40 video channels into the 3 streams seen above: Performance, Narrative, and Dance.

A video about the process.

Feedback on Director's Commentary

Excellent considerate understanding of the technologies used in production of the video, for example in terms of set design quality and the use of FCP to create effective set design and mise en scene – the kiss represents the electric feel.

There are evident links between creative decision making and use of technology on both productions of the video using professional digital cameras and in the post production editing process – in discussion of match of action, lip syncing and graphic matching’. This is sustained and thorough and accurate in discussion of the branded themes of an electric feel for example in discussion of the beat of the song and pacing of the cuts used in the editing process.
The commentary shows a discrete awareness of the use of new media technology and uses discriminating examples really well, particularly to selection and construction of narrative, editing techniques, such as FCP Tools – such as glow in colour process. Excellent command of terminology and understands and discusses convergence really well – this is impressive knowledge at times.

There is sustained justified decision making links between the technologies used the product and audience reception in terms of the creativity that the group used. Recognises the need to account for errors in the post production stage and the importance of convergent technologies. Well evaluated.
This is a well considered documentary

Evaluation Task 4

Evaluation Task 4: Preproduction

Before we could commence production, we had a lot of research to do. All of which is documented in the September - November blogs. Technology that we used was:

Internet
- To research similar artists through YouTube
- To order the necessary props
- To research costumes, band style
- To find a band name we decided to go on Google Translate and type in some stereotypical hippy words and see what they translated to in foreign languages. I was fond of using a Scandinavian term, but in the end we decided on 'Lanmou' which is the Haitian Creole word for Love.
- The internet was the most used tool in our research as it allowed us to find all the necessary information in addition to some video examples.

Blogger
- To record our creative progress
- Blogger has been a key tool throughout the process, as it means that we can access all of our work from any computer, and obviously is where all of this is being recorded.

Photoshop
- For drafting the cover art,
- Creating a consistent theme, to stick to throughout production.
- In photoshop, we used image layering and effects to create our cover art, and each of us did 1 or 2 drafts each that were eventually presented to the group. Collectively we then chose our favourite and themed the rest of the Digipack to match it.
- Using photoshop rather than another program allowed us to play around more extensively with the properties of each image, such as the opacity and colour.

Camera
- For making the Animatic, we took our storyboard and made a rough video cut, to get a feel for what the video might look like with the music.

Final Cut Pro
- For editing our animatic, and was good practice for us to get used to the editing process again after a long break. Utilising FCP allowed us to alter the animatic at any time, slotting in extra shots if needed. Also FCP allowed us to directly upload our animatics to YouTube after they were done.

Without all of the above technology, we would not have been able to have made our product as quickly as we did, or to the same quality. The pros of digital technology, and web based technology is that it can be altered at any time and improved on a whim. Also it allows us to make multiple copies of each stage, or in the case of FCP, make alternate sequences on a parallel timeline.

Evaluation Task 3 - part 2

According to Theorist Stuart Hall, audience reading can be broken down into three different readings,

  • The Dominant Reading - is when the viewer decodes the desired codes of the product.
  • The Negotiated Reading - is when the reader accepts the dominant reading, but with their own twists.
  • The Oppositional Reading - is when the viewer interprets the product in a totally unexpected way, that has not been at all encoded.

Mostly, our target audience decoded the dominant reading, which followed the evening of one teenager's life, and how he is blown into another scene by the 'electric feel'. The Electric Feel stems from the kiss and is left up to audience to decide how the evening plays out, for that was the end of the narrative. We also got a fair amount of feedback from people who interpreted a negotiated reading. They recognised that the kiss was symbolic, but over thought it's meaning and presumed that it was a transition from reality into a psychoactive drug induced trip.

However, we did however get some oppositional reading, one reaction was that the girl was manipulating the guy and came up with some quite sinister interpretations. However, this is inevitable from music videos, as there will always be the one person who sees things differently.

Regarding the Digipack, our feedback was largely positive and of the dominant reading. The reception of the colour scheme was very popular from a large age group, and I feel as if the Digipack may even have appealed to a wider audience than the video itself. To ensure there was synergy between the three products, we mimicked the coloured lights of the party in our Digipack. However, I noticed that there was a different interpretation of the band between those who saw the video first and those who saw the digipack first. The ones who saw the video first were more likely to interpret a negotiated reading, and those who saw the digipack first had a more dominant reading.
